NEW ideas for strengthening all aspects of rural life in the UK are now being supported with overseas research grants.
These are available to anyone living or working in the countryside, and others, for non-academic studies of the best ideas and practice to be found anywhere in the world.
The Churchill Fellowships in Rural Living will fund Fellows to explore new thinking on any topic related to improving or transforming rural life, including the economy, infrastructure, public services, health and wellbeing.
Applications are particularly encouraged that explore multidisciplinary approaches, for example to invigorate transport networks, reimagine housing, employment and enterprise, or improve access to education, culture and healthcare.
These Fellowships are supported by a partnership between the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and The Prince’s Countryside Fund.
Churchill Fellowships are travel grants that fund dedicated and dynamic individuals to research innovative ideas and best practice overseas, then bring their global insights back to the UK and make change happen in their professions and communities.
Fellowships are available in 12 fields of interest, including the Rural Living category. Examples of past Fellows who have explored rural issues are here.
Julia Weston, chief executive of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, said: “Rural communities are facing both challenges and opportunities and these Fellowships aim to strengthen them in a changing world.”
Claire Saunders, director of The Prince’s Countryside Fund, said: “We hope that people will be inspired by the opportunities offered by the Churchill Fellowships in Rural Living.
"Our partnership will allow people to undertake research at a practical level that can make a real difference to those living and working in rural communities across the UK.
"From collaborative ways of working, to solving infrastructure issues in the countryside, this category offers a breath of fresh air and opportunity.”
Everyone can apply for a Churchill Fellowship, regardless of age, background or qualifications, so long as they are a UK citizen aged 18 or over.

The deadline for applications is September 17, 2019, for travel in 2020.
