Kivells of Exeter saw a huge entry of cull sows at last Friday's market, with an entry of 114 sows coming from as far afield as west Sussex, Bristol and west Cornwall.
The bumper entry included a wonderful line up of large White sows which came from Messrs Green of west Sussex (a 381 mile round trip) and sold to a top call of £158, with their top five averaging £156.50. Chris Down of Budleigh Salterton saw the pick of his team reach £152, going off to its purchaser in Essex.
Overall the top 50 sows sold to a fantastic average of £147.90. Trade was strong too for the prime pigs, which saw a top call of £130 for 92kg ‘White porkers’ in from Messrs Turner of Coombe Martin, with plenty of vendors up and over the £120 bracket.

Speaking after the sale, James Morrish of Kivells said: “It is fantastic to see huge support from both buyers and sellers for the pig department at Exeter.
"Buyers continue to travel to Exeter to buy their stock and over the past 12 months we have seen an increase in farm shop and local butchers join the ever growing line up of buyers who travel from as far afield as Dorset, Wales, Somerset and all over the West Country on a regular basis."
