A fair entry sold through the slaughter ring contained mixed quality with the best enteredinto the Christmas Prize Sale kindly sponsored by NFU Mutual Insurance. With several
butchers and abattoir buyers in attendance, trade was firm with strong prices achieved in terms of total price and pence per kilo. Top price per kilo was 235p for a Limousin x steer from Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth winning Class 4 and bought by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Mr. Eddy also had a British Blue x steer equal top at 227p/kg jointly winning Class 2 and selling to Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers, Helston; the same premium paid for best Limousin x steer from Messrs. W.T. Bryant & Sons of St. Martin at 664kg realising £1,507 to Mr. D.J. Moyle Butcher of Beacon. Mr. Bryant’s two other heavy Limousin x steers saw a 778kg monster realise £1,626 to David King and 725kg realise £1,610 to Chris Dale. Dearest heifer a 618kg British Blue x for Messrs. R.J. & E.J. Hemmings of Lanlivery selling at £1,378 to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd. An entry of young, untested and unfinished store cattle were sold through the ring realising respectable prices with a number of buyers present having Approved Finishing Units. Ten Hereford crosses for Messrs. J.S. & A.M. Nicholls of Newbridge, Penzance saw steers to 175p/kg and heifers to 177p/kg.

A slightly decreased number of cull cows on offer this week containing several well-fleshed large frame sorts but also a proportion of lightweight and small in stature cows including several Dexters. Leading the beef types to 129p/kg was a Hereford x from Messrs. R.P. & B. Warren of Roche purchased by David King of Exeter. Two big Simmentals from Mr. I.C. Michell of Nancegollan saw heaviest 949kg cow realising £1,177 to David Ellis of Lelant. Few best quality Friesians forward saw a standout top price of 134p/kg and £931 for a 33 month old heifer from Messrs. W. Marsh & Son of St. Stephen bought by Roger Eddy of Tehidy.

Particular demand for stronger cattle requiring less time to finish. Top price of the day was £1,060 for Messrs. S. & T. Penellum of St. Newlyn East with a superb show quality 10 month old Limousin steer. Three bunches of suckled calves forward including March-born Limousin crosses from Messrs. H. Williams & Son of Tehidy topping with steers to £675 and trio of heifers at £610.
