Greenslade Taylor Hunt report another large entry in the 90s saw a more selective trade, when a lot of middle of the road cows, that were more difficult to sell, consequently were on offer. The overall averages were down on previous weeks.
The entry also included a lot of smaller heifers that reflected in the trade.
The best that were in shorter supply sold to £2100 and £2000 for heifers from Deptford Farms. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an excellent entry of 610 stores, as numbers start to tail off towards the end of the year and part of 907 with the stirks, which met a tremendous trade for the best stores, as they become shorter in supply.
Top was £1365 for a grand Blue (27m & FA) from R Chaddock, Butleigh, who sold further big frame Blues at £1290 (24m & FA) £1220 (29m & FA) and £1195 (28m & FA) and well grown Limousin steers at £1275 (31m & FA) and £1195 again (27m & FA). Top drawer feeding Blues at £1295 (only 17/18m & FA) from PA Strawbridge, Offwell, who sold a quality suckler bred Simmental at £1235 (only 19m & FA) and a Blue at £1195 again (20m & FA). Really well grown dairy bred Limousins at £1275 (22/24m & FA) G Pratt & Son, Kentisbeare. Very smart, red, near pure Limousin at £1230 (19m & FA) WJ Bown, Catcott. Store Lambs (1585) – Friday Afternoon Sale
A much reduced entry of 1585 store lambs for the first Friday afternoon sale, met spirited bidding. Best lambs and forward types met a stand-on trade, when smaller, long keep lambs achieved a touch less. Heaviest of the day to £108 from T Bere. Others to £100 from Potticks Pigs Ltd; £98 from T Bere; £95.50 from RF Bowden and JB & B Hobbs; £94.50 from PC Lyons & Son; £93.50 from T Bere; £91.50 from Alstone Court Partners and £90 from GN Smalldon, A Burland and G Taylor. Overall average £78.74.
Cull Ewes and Rams (593)
A much reduced entry of 593 cull ewes and rams sold to a firmer trade for all presented. Best of the ewes to £121 from LW Ford & Sons. Goats (11)
Only 11 goats forward but still a fantastic level of demand. No really heavy types on offer, when the top call was £96 for a cull nanny from NF Clothier & Sons Ltd. Others to £90 from the same Vendor and £88 from Horseley Farm Partnership. Overall average £84.
186 PIGS
Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a nice entry of pigs sold to an easier trade in line with other market centres and all reports within the industry. The younger pigs holding firm and achieved a similar trade to two weeks ago.
Weaners (41)
Good entry – stand on trade which was a bright light for the days trading. Top of the day £48 for a good pen of 13 w/o from DR Hutchings, when his second pen sold at £37. Good types from P Hughes to £31.
Cull Sow & Boars (14)
We have seen a big adjustment in the trade for this section over the last few weeks. Medium sows back to £60/head. The best today sold to £100 from J Sacre, when the majority of the others forward sold within the £40-£60 per head bracket. RJ Maltby sows to £60 and Mitchell Partners to £58.
Forward Stores (131)
Another very good entry – trade easier by £10-£15/head. The best achieved £136 for a good pen of heavy gilts from M Nicholas. A good run of 36 from Mitchell Partners to £120 and another good run from LE Miller & Son to £110.
