The rules for cars towing trailers are changing.

Tests stopped from yesterday (September 20) before the actual law changes.

Therefore no tests can now be booked.

The law will change later in the autumn - so until then drivers must follow the current rules.

Drivers towing trailers can be fined up to £1,000, be banned from driving and get up to six penalty points if they tow anything heavier before the law changes.

Drivers being supervised can tow a heavier vehicle but only if they show L plates to the front of the car and the rear of the trailer and are accompanied by someone who is over 21 years old and has had a category BE on their driving licence for a minimum of three years.

Once the law has changed, people who have passed their car driving test from January 1, 1997 will be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM.

DVLA will automatically update your driving licence record by adding a category BE added to your driving licence on new photocard driving licence.
