One outbreak of avian flu has been confirmed in Devon , with a second outbreak suspected at a site just seven miles from the infected premises.
This morning (Thursday, April 7) Defra reported that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been confirmed in birds at a premises near Newton St Cyres - and that bird flu is suspected in birds at a site near Tedburn St Mary, Teignbridge, seven miles away.
All birds on the infected site near Newton St Cyres are to be humanely culled.
To reduce the risk of the disease spreading, a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone was put in place around each of the premises last night at 9pm.
A vet alerted the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) to their suspicions of bird flu at the site near Tedburn St Mary.
On considering the findings, the CVO agreed and a temporary control zone has been put in place.
Measures for poultry owners in the marked zones include keeping records of visitors, poultry and any movement of poultry and eggs.
Tighter biosecurity is required and birds have to be housed or isolated.
