Machinery shows across the south west fired up to break records and grow in number last year.
Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) saw an increased number of dispersal sales as well as the welcome return of the one-day Walford Cross sale and the addition of three new collective sales.
The trade was buoyant throughout the year as the effects of lengthy lead times and lack of availability of new items following Covid continued.
Highlights of the year included the spring trade at Walford Cross, the regions' largest one-day machinery show and it did not disappoint - in fact, it saw the largest sale total ever to have taken place at the site.
Each year five collective sales are held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre. A top price of £47,500 for the New Holland T6.145 was achieved at the December sale.
The firm organised three new collective sales in 2022. The first was the North Somerset Sale at Wrington, which saw a Land Rover Defender 90 sell for £32,000. The sale will return in May.
The Honiton area is a real stronghold for GTH, with a strong level of support for Sedgemoor Auction Centre as well as a loyal client base for the firm’s agricultural professional work offering. As a result an autumn collective sale in East Devon was widely supported with a line up of more than 30 tractors and a huge wealth of machinery. A Fendt 724 led the way and topped the sale at £47,200. There will be a return to East Devon in autumn.
For the third new collective sale GTH teamed up with auctioneers Gwilym Richards & Co to conduct a sale at Chepstow Racecourse, so successful that a further sale is scheduled for March.
One of the highlights of the year was the sale for AK Hosie & Sons at Sherborne. A super line-up of tractors and machinery was to be sold as the family had decided to cease contracting and focus on their dairy enterprise.
The crowds, in person and online, ensured it was a blistering trade with the Krone Big Pack 1290 Square Baler at £75,000, Case 270 Optum at £67,000 and John Deere 6140R at £52,000 being the top three prices.
The Krone was only spotted by the purchaser on the sale morning as part of GTH’s social media marketing campaign, with the online bidding portal providing the purchaser the perfect opportunity to acquire the machine, whilst also increasing the level of trade for the vendor – win win!
Whilst there appears to be downward pressure on the agricultural machinery trade, supply is still very much restricted and demand will therefore remain to be the driving force in the market place.
Anyone with surplus farm machinery or wants to discuss the potential for an on-site dispersal sale, should contact GTH’s specialist team on 01278 410250 to discuss the options.
