There has recently been a spate of heating oil thefts in East Devon.
East Devon Police are warning rural home owners to be alert and take preventative measures.
They advise that anyone with heating oil keeps a close eye on the fuel levels so that, should oil be stolen, there is a more accurate timescale.
Police say that deterrents are effective at protecting fuel tanks such as good lighting, signage and CCTV cameras.

Protecting tanks from view can be done by planting dense shrubs and with fencing and locked gates.
Quality locks are useful and closed shank padlocks offer the most resistance, they say.
They are asking people to report any people, vehicles or activities that appear suspicious.
