Stags auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre report an excellent entry forward at
their annual July Fair sale which included the special sale of Galloway and Hill Bred
cattle. A total of 478 cattle were forward and met 100% clearance. There was a
packed crowd around the ring throughout most of the sale ensuring a decent trade
throughout.
Prices topped at £3000 for a 34mo Pedigree Charolais Bull ‘Cove Stanley’ from Mr P
Skelley, Shaugh Prior. Cows and calves again met a strong trade this month topping at
£1860 for a 2year old Pedigree South Devon Cow with a 2month old Bull Calf at foot
from Messrs NA & MF Holt-Martyn, Tavistock. Similar outfits from the same vendor
with heifer calves at foot sold to £1760 and £1600. A 5 year old Aberdeen Angus
cross (Named Sire) cow with a 3 month old heifer calf at foot sold to £1480 for Mr E
Distin, Botus Fleming.
The sale started with the Grazing cows which topped at £1070 for a pair of 3yo South
Devon cross cows from Mr M H Northmore, Horrabridge.
In the Store Cattle pens trade topped at £1390 for a bunch of six 23mo South Devon
steers from Messrs Abel Bros, Peter Tavy. Next best was £1380 for a 22mo Beef
Shorthorn cross steer from Messrs E M Alford & Son, Tavistock. Abel Bros also had
£1340 for a pen of 23mo South Devon steers.
Topping the heifer at £1280 for a 21mo Charolais crosses from Messrs GTJ & AR
Medland, Tavistock. The special sale of Galloway Cattle saw prices top at £1265 for
six 23mo Galloway steers from Messrs Abel Bros, Peter Tavy. Belted Galloway
bulling heifers sold to £780 for a pen of six 26mo from Messrs D & A Bolitho,
Liskeard. Messrs W H & A Willcocks, Ivybridge had their annual run of Blue Grey
heifers which topped at £710 for a pen of seven 21mo.
Other notable prices included £1285 for a pair of 20mo South Devon Steers from
Messrs GTJ & AR Medland, Tavistock; £1195 for another pair of 16mo Hereford
crosses steers from Mrs Kim Langley, Mary Tavy; £990 for a 23mo Charolais cross
heifer from Mr GR Hill, Lamerton; £995 for a pen of 4 20mo Welsh Black steers from
Messrs DH & C Legassick, Sheepstor; £990 for a 18mo Charolais cross steer from
Messrs J & G Nankivell, Tavistock.
There was another decent trade for the younger cattle with prices topping at £960 for a
pen of six 10-12mo Charolais crosses steers from Messrs Abel Bros, Peter Tavy who
had another pen of 6 at £950. Other notable prices included £940 for five 12-13mo
South Devon steers from Messrs D & A Hutchins, Tavistock; £800 for a pen of 5 8mo
Aberdeen Angus crosses steers from Mr T F Jasper, Lewannick.
