Ram trade was strong from start to finish at Wednesday’s NSA South West Ram Sale, Exeter, with prices peaking at 2600gns in the Charollais, with both Texels and Suffolks hitting 1500gns.
Topping the day’s sale was the pre-sale champion in the Charollais ring, shearling ram
Preistleigh Achilles from Tom Newth, Castle Cary. Sired by Cavick What About That and out of a dam by Boyo Untouchable, he sold to the judge Geoff Probert for the Mortimers flock, Worcester.
Taking the first of two 1500gns calls was a Texel shearling ram from Michael Lear’s
Sidborough flock. This was Sidborough Fivestar, a Knap Earl son out of a dam by Cambwell Cobalt. He was the pick of N Rottenbury, Heasley Mill, South Molton.
The other ram to make this money was a Suffolk shearling from E W Quick and Son and
Nicky Hartwright’s pen, with this one selling to join D W Ridd at West Buckland, Barnstaple.

And four then traded at 1100gns, with two of these being Texels and two being Charollais. First of the Texels at this level was shearling ram Loosebeare Friendly from the Quick family. Sired by Empire Churchill, he is out of a dam by Kimbolton Arrow and was knocked down to R S Frank, Chasewater, Truro.
The second 1100gns Texel was Hornacott Fierry from Phil Martyn-Uglow and family. He’s by the homebred Hornacott Emperor and out of a dam by Whitehart Unleashed and sold to R and M F Rottenbury, Chipstable, Taunton.
Both of the 1100gns Charollais came from Mike Alford’s Foxhill flock, with the first being
Foxhill Almighty, a Thackwood U Corker son out of a dam by Logie Durno Olympian, with
this one selling to Peckmoor Farming, Henley, Crewkerne.
The same buyers then took the other at this money, Foxhill 22XWY00727. He’s by Rockvilla Ferrair and out of a Logie Dogie Olympian-sired dam.
The Derryman family, Honiton, then took 1050gns for the best of their Suffolk shearlings, with this one finding a new home with E J Mills, Raddington, Taunton.
Best of the other breeds on offer saw E W Quick and Son sell a pair of crossbred rams at
920gns, with both of these going to M J Turpin and Son, Rodborough, Plymouth.
A Border Leicester from Sue Martyn’s Hornacott flock then made 800gns, with this being
Hornacott BL12YU30. He’s by Summerfields Rockstar and out of a Drennan’s dam and sold to S W Poad, Blunts, Saltash.
And the best of the Beltex on offer made 700gns for Tracey Cobbledick. This shearling ram was the pick of W R Wrixon and Son, Horton, Wimborne.
