THERE were excellent entries at the 123rd Annual Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale in Somerset on Wednesday (November 29).
And Frome Fatstock Society presented cheques to both the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Frome Market Health Hub for £500 each.
The event was held at The Agricultural Centre, Standerwick in Frome.
The final championship line up was judged by Richard Wright from Somerton. Young Farmer Archie Stamp took the title of supreme champion with his Limousin steer selling at 405p/kg and £2,382 to Whiterow Farm Shop of Beckington, Frome.
Reserve champion, a British blue heifer was shown by Lucy Gould achieving the top price of the day at 445p/kg and £2,707. Champion in the unhandled cattle section was taken by Stuart Perkins with his limousin steer selling at 300p/kg who also took champion cow with his limousin.
"It was fantastic to see such excellent show stock judged so well by Richard," said Bradley Towell, cattle auctioneer.
"The quality was reflected in the premium prices buyers paid – well done to all exhibitors. It is positively reassuring to see the show well supported. We can always do with more to satisfy demand driven principally by a number of butchers who regularly attend the market and are always looking to buy the very best.”
The lambs were judged by Ed Davies from Shepton Beauchamp. Mr AGF Lockyer of East Huntspill saw his champion lambs sell at £160 per head. The champion pen of pigs sold at £345/head shown by Mr N Legge of Bromard, Hereford selling to the judge, John May.
Calf auctioneers Tim Hector and Tom Rogers saw a quality entry judged by Ashley Powell from Horton, Bristol and a super British blue bull calf from SJ Stevens & Son, Masbury Wells, took the championship, selling at £495.
A spokesperson for the show added: "Thank you to all vendors, buyers, sponsors and judges for your support of the show and throughout the year. A great day was had by all!"
