TAVISTOCK Young Farmers’ Club (YFC) from the South Dartmoor Group are having a brilliant summer with an incredibly varied and busy club programme.
With something for everyone, Tavistock YFC epitomise the YFC slogan of ‘fun, learning and achievement’ - with a whole host of different activities designed to give members new skills, whilst also have lots of fun in the process.
As well as taking part in fun social activities such as line dancing and bell ringing, the club is known for supporting its’ members with traditional agricultural skills such as sheep shearing and stock judging.
Charlotte Abel, Tavistock YFC’s Club Secretary, said: “We’ve held several club sheep shearing practices this year, where both novice and experienced shearers have been able to develop their skills. Local shearers Roger Cole and Chris Ruby have been on hand to help us out and we had a very competitive club shearing final.
“It’s amazing to see our members not only try it for the first time, but also some members go on to use it within their career and have even travelled to New Zealand during their shearing season.”
Tavistock Young Farmers have been busy fundraising throughout the year, not only for club funds, but also for their chosen charity - the Plymouth and Cornwall Cancer Fund. Fundraising events have included their annual dung sale, a community bingo and more.
Charlotte added: “We wanted to reward the members for all their hard work and have subsidised a series of fun activities from go-karting to line dancing, making sure that all ages can get involved.
“Line dancing was a first for the club and everyone loved giving it a go. We’ve also held a skittles night, table tennis tournament and Holsworthy Market tour to name a few.
“More recently, our club leaders Sally Blowey, Chris Dawe and Rob Hockin hosted a ‘leaders challenge’ afternoon. This was an ‘It’s a Knockout’ style activity that included a relay race, tug of war and tag rugby.
“We had over 60 people attend, with our advisory and Club President getting involved too. It was great to see the whole club get together!”
