THE sun shone down on Dartmoor as visitors flocked to the Chagford Show on Thursday, August 15.
In its 122nd year, the show was held on Dogmarsh Fields, thanks to kind permission of the National Trust, the Malseed Family, Mr P Morish, Mr H De Ferranti and Miss B Hayter-Hames.
The main ring included multiple horse competitions, from Dartmoor ponies to heavy horses. And guests enjoyed watching events such as the 'Lamb National', the parade of fox hounds and the terrier racing.
In the evening, there was even an opportunity to take part in a Tug of War event.
There were horticultural tents as well as a craft tent, and lots of entertainment for the children, such as bouncy castles, the Slackline School and the climbing wall.
Rows of vintage vehicles were on show, and there were sheep and cattle to look at as well.
I visited the show with my toddler, and my dog, which I thought would be stressful - but there were lots to keep them both entertained. From stalls handing out free dog treats, and lots of things to look at from meerkats in the pets corner tent to the BubbleMan blowing bubbles of all shapes and sizes. There was even a baby changing and feeding tent which was very useful.
Every field we walked to had something to keep us entertained, from horse-riding to terrier racing, and we enjoyed food from a variety of stalls - including a delicious hog roast and Caribbean jerk chicken. I even found delicious gluten free treats - a snickers rocky road bar and a gluten free scotch egg - yum!
As ever, there were the popular livestock competitions. Results are as follows:
- SUPREME CATTLE CHAMPION: May 2022-born British Charolais heifer, Polgoda Tulip, bred by Mr D R & Mrs B Stacey and exhibited by Steven Ley and Hannah Payne
- SUPREME SHEEP CHAMPION: Badgerface Texel shearling ewe, Tordown Elle, bred and exhibited by Steven Ley and Hannah Payne
- RESERVE SHEEP CHAMPION: A Scotch Blackface old ram, bred and exhibited by Gordon Mortimore (I G Mortimore & Son) from Shapley, Chagford.
