A LIFE-SIZED horse mannequin will be taking part in a charity's summer fete this weekend.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary ran a crowdfunder earlier this year to help purchase the life-saving model equine to help with their work.

Max the mannequin has now joined the team and will be at the charity's free-to-enter summer fete in Totnes on Sunday (August 25).

The mannequin is being used to help train staff and local vets in equine extraction techniques.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary is working in partnership with The British Animal Rescue & Trauma Care Association (BARTA) to offer a series of collaborative training days sharing best practice with rescue teams.

Visitors to the summer fete will also have the chance to meet some of the sanctuary's well-loved horses.

A spokesperson for The Mare and Foal Sanctuary shared some information about their most loved animals: "Miniature Shetland Sir Didymus and his best friend, piebald cob Ludo were both found abandoned and starving on wasteland eight years ago. Ludo was covered in engine oil before the pair were rescued by the Sanctuary and nursed back to health.

"Skewbald pony Geronimo had untreated medical conditions and needed one of his eyes removed when he came to the Sanctuary in 2018. His trainer Georgie taught him a basic ‘dance’ move to overcome his fear of narrow doorways.

"And beautiful grey mare Vogue was given sanctuary when she and her foal-at-foot Vagabond were rescued from dangerous conditions at a South Devon stud farm."

There will also be equine demonstrations, stallholders, games and activities, live music and a range of local food and drink at the fete.

The fete will take place at Coombe Park Equestrian and Education Centre, near Totnes from 11am until 4pm.
