Waitrose has become the first supermarket to introduce 'free range' cream in some of its own-label products.
This new offering includes single, double, whipping, and extra thick cream under both the Waitrose Essentials and Waitrose own brand.
Waitrose stated that this launch reinforces the retailer's commitment to leading in higher animal welfare and superior food production standards.
Rachel Aldridge, Waitrose's dairy buyer, commented: “Having successfully launched free range milk a couple of years ago we knew that we could challenge ourselves to expand the offering to free range cream. We’re proud to be the first supermarket to make it happen and hope others will follow suit.”
Two years ago, Waitrose committed to ensuring that all its dairy cattle graze outside for at least 183 days each year.
The company pointed out that a fifth of UK dairy herds are kept in indoor systems year-round, but access to the outdoors is 'critical' for cow wellbeing.
Jake Pickering, Waitrose's senior agriculture manager, added: “We’re consistently challenging ourselves and pushing the boundaries of animal welfare across our ranges.
"By working with our dairy farmers and suppliers to introduce free range cream it means that we can provide customers with the best products along with continued higher animal welfare standards.”
The products have been available in stores since August 26 and can also be ordered online.
