AS part of British Egg Week 2024 (October 7-13), the West Country Egg Layers Association (WCLA) held an event on the Cathedral Green in Exeter at the weekend.

Visitors flocked to their marquee on Saturday, October 12, to enjoy cooking demonstrations, see chicks and hens, and listen to talks on sustainability and British farming.

There were also nutritional experts who were on hand to talk about the health benefits of eggs.

Tim Gelfs, WCLA chairman, said: "Today’s event to celebrate World Egg Day, which was on Friday (October 11) and British Egg Week, has been a great success on the Cathedral Green in Exeter.

"We have had a busy day with lots of visitors enjoying handling day old chicks, seeing how we grade eggs and watching local chefs create nutritious and versatile meals with eggs.

"We have had some really good questions being asked of our poultry farmers and nutritionists and feedback has been very positive."

Tim is from Westleaze Farm in West Dorset and was appointed chairman of WCLA earlier this year. Tim is also vice chair for the NFU in Dorset and runs two free range units.

The aim of the WCLA is to bring egg producers and ancillary trades together to represent the sector in the South West.

The next WCLA meeting will be on November 20 at 7pm at the Padbrook Park Hotel in Cullompton.
